PATTERNS AND ROUTINES FOR INTERNATIONAL CHA CHA CHA -copyright Jonathan Tyrone Rowell, 2003 Notes: 1) The style is flirtatious. 2) Use Latin rather than Cuban motion (straight not bent knee). 3) At bronze and silver, Int. Cha Cha and Rumba are almost completely identical, and routines can switched easily between the two. Bronze 1. Basic Movements - fwd and and back breaks separated by either a side chasse (Closed Basic) or fwd/back chasse (Open Basic). Because Cha Cha is a bit faster, you can get away with more use of the basic than in Rumba. 2. New York - the power move, aka Cross Over Breaks. Couple steps through partnership into LSP or RSP on the break. Lots of flash available, but don't overuse. Often combined with Prom Breaks to form Butterfly amalgamation. 3. Spot Turns Left and Right - aka switch turns. May be taken either to left or right as a New York break with a full rotation (both toes fixed) - don't spin wildly on break foot, and don't make it a jerky Alemana-knock-off either 3b. Underarm Turns - lady does a spot turn under joined arms, as man back performs a basic movement 4. Shoulder to Shoulder - aka Outside or Parallel breaks. man steps outside partner with either L or R foot fwd. Use double hold 5. Hand to Hand - "opposite" of New York. Open up the partnership to break behind. make right angles with the feet. Unlike American, don't keep arm around back/shoulder. Rather keep hand hold in either direction (hence the name), R2L or L2R 6. Three Cha Chas Forward - variety of hold and position, take three sets of locks fwd (back for follower) to the rhythm of 4&1 2&3 4&1. Precede and Follow with back and fwd breaks. Three Cha Chas are your floor navigation patterns to get you to open spaces or to where the judges are. 6b. Three Cha Chas Backward - identical to above, but man goes backwards and lady goes fwd. Common transition to Natural Top, Curl and Open Hip Twist. 6c. Three Cha Chas in LSP - Both dancers lock fwd facing the same direction, woman on man's left side. Typically preceded by the breaking action of Hand to Hand in LSP. 6d. Three Cha Chas in RSP - both lock fwd in RSP. 7. Side Steps - steps are either side or together. May be initiated with either foot and travel to either left or right. Also a navigation step, but less dynamic. 8. There and Back - this strange pattern also appears in the American Syllabus as Backward and Forward Runs. Instead of a LF fwd break, the couple rocks in place, then takes three running steps (passing not locking) backward away from one another. Back rock and three runs fwd to close again. It is rarely used either socially or competitively. One advantange it has is collision avoidance, if another couple is barrelling in with cha chas or side steps. Open up and let them pass. One idea that I've had recently is to use the fwd runs as an entrance into the Natural Top (6-15) by the man curving his line as the woman approaches. 9. Time Steps - Cuban cross behind on the break step of the basic. Traditional shaping is away from break, so LF cross behind RF and lean to left with top line/arm line lower to left and higher to right (still straight). Figure is best known when combined with Guapacha timing. 10. Fan - The first high Bronze figure learned by people. Similar to a cross body lead where the guy releases the woman and leads her away from his side. End either at 90 degree or 120 degree angle with L2R hold. Lady back locks on the second measure 11. Alemana - the first measure is the "out of fan" movement, done in almost any figure started in fan position. in lieu of a rock step, lady will collect, swivel and step forward on 2&3. She then fwd locks to man. Guy just does a basic in place. The second measure starts with a 1/8R turn, followed by two fwd steps and then a fwd lock (sometimes side chasse for different endings). She will turn 1 1/8R underarm over the measure. Guy dances in place. Some styling has the man either turning on his second measure, or even replacing his compact basic with RF back, LF side, RF fwd lock. The latter is particularly useful to moving into position for a Natural Opening Out figure. Note that the woman is tracking on 2 and 3, not performing a spot turn. 12. Hockey Stick - typically the first fan figure taught. The first measure as above. Bringing his arm across his body in a window or watch-check action, the man leads the woman to turn 1/8L between measures. He back rocks while she takes two fwd steps (23). Tugging and lowering the joined hands causes her to pivot 1/2L (&). Finish with a fwd (back) lock in open position. 13. Natural Top - personal favorite of mine. The couple dances in a circle about a fixed spot between them. RF steps are hooks, LF steps are side for the man. Woman takes LF side and RF fwd in front (almost a ball swivel). Normal rhythm is maintained through out. Normally entered from 1-5 Open Basic or Three Cha Chas Back. Normally performed for 1 or 3 measures. One variation exits after the second measure by then leading the woman into 7-10 of Hockey Stick (guy will still hook with RF on 2). Another is lead a woman to perform an underarm turn to the left on the even measures. This last version is frequently extended to 5 measures, turning the woman on measures 2 and 4. 14. Natural Opening Out Movement - LEARN THIS BEFORE THE CLOSED HIP TWIST. Too often, the ending to the Top or an overturned Alemana is presented as the Closed Hip Twist, and followers automatically assume that any natural opening out action is the hip twist. This complicates leading the Reverse Top (which can only be entered via the Natural Opening Out Movement). Lady back rocks into RSP, then 1/4L to fwd chasse in front of man. 15. Closed Hip Twist - ladies, learn this move second so that you are listening for the lead to engage in a hip twist. Open Out as above, but turn 1/2L instead of a 1/4L after the rock. RF fwd and chasse in place. Now on a second measure, turn from the hips first 1/4R to take two steps across man, pivot 1/2L and finish with back lock into Fan Position. 16. Compact Chasse - close-transfer-transfer. May be used as needed in any figure. 16b. Alternative Compact Chasse - small side-replace-close. (6m) There and Back, Natural Top 6-15, Natural Opening Out, UAT R Silver/Licentiate 1. Open Hip Twist - Combine the first measure of an Open Basic with the second measure of the Closed Hip Twist. 2. Reverse Top - Guy's LF is the fixed center of the couple's circle. Guy's footwork is RF side and fwd, LF ball-swivel to cross. Woman is LF behind in cuban cross, and RF back and side. The pattern is repeated in normal rhythm. Normally, the Reverse Top is preceded by the Natural Opening Out Movment and it lasts for up to three measures. 3. Opening Out from Reverse Top - dance only two measures of the reverse top. Guy then goes RF fwd/side, LF cross, and side chasses curving L. The lady makes another cuban cross-RF back and then steps LF back to chasse to fan. 4. Aida - a figure that travels to the left (right) somewhat like the first half of the Rhythm Paseo pattern. Both take two steps back (RL -guy, LR lady), to open away from each other into LSP. Back Lock in this hold. Two exits are possible in cha cha. Rock and Spot Turn has two weight transfers, a fwd chasse, then 1/2 turn into one another to initiate a Spot Turn to L (1 1/4) to end facing. The Switch and UAT R has the couple turning to face before a side step and replace with compact chasse. Finish with an UAT R. 5. Spiral - as with Rumba, there is the figure "Spiral" and then there is simply the spiral action. With weight on RF, turn L and allow LF to loosely cross in front. Alternatively, with weight on LF, turn R and allow RF to loosely cross in front. This is the spiral action. The Spiral figure is a Natural Opening Out Movment, followed by a spiral action on the RF to turn 7/8L (&), and ended with the back half of the Fan, lady curving L. 6. Curl - 1-5 Open Basic, then spiral action 5/8L, and end with 6-10 of Fan, Lady curving L. 7. Rope Spinning - Lady makes a full spiral turn R on her LF at end of previous figure. Woman then walks (23) and locks(4&1) fwd for two measures to circle clockwise around man back to closed position. 8. Cross Basic - turn a normal basic 1/2L over two measures. When LF fwd breaks, cross it in front of RF, and when RF back breaks, cross it behind LF (both man and woman). Body incline L on 1 and 2 and R on 6 and 7. 9. Cuban Breaks - syncopated break action. May be done in a variety of holds and positions. Rhythm is 2&3&4&1. Break foot fwd and across small, replace, side, replace, break, replace, and side. Either foot. 9b. Split Cuban Breaks - dance LF syncopated break (2&3) then dance RF syncopated break (4&1). 10. Chase - similar to the American Rhythm figure with half turns. Big difference is that on LF fwd breaks, the RF is not held fixed as a spot turn, but is collected without weight on beat 3 on the first and fourth measure. As a result, guy will do three turns to R on his LF and three fwd locks from the RF. Woman open basic on measure 1. Normal chase on measures 2 and 3, and a full turn on the last measure. 11. Ronde Chasse - LF circles out to cross behind RF, RF fwd, LF side. 12. Twist Chasse - 1/4L then RF fwd in pressed walk, 1/4R on RF and LF close, then RF side. Turns initiated from hip. This one you can get away with in Bronze for the Fan. 13. Slip Chasse - LF back, slide RF back about 3in, then close LF 14. Guapacha - the "beautiful cha", a rhythm difference seen most often with the Time Steps. on the break step, instead of "23", break to the time of "a3". Other figures can use the Guapacha timing.
