PATTERNS AND ROUTINES FOR INTERNATIONAL JIVE -copyright Jonathan Tyrone Rowell, 2003 Bronze Notes: 1) Jive is the fastest of the Latin dances. It is placed last in the competition order to test the overall endurance of the couples dancing. 2) Jive frame is a bit more stiff (Latin) than traditional swing posture. 1. Basic In Place - closed position, no turn, rock-step replaced with close-replace, this is used for rhythm practice only 2. Fallaway Rock - closed position basic, aka Closed Basic 3. Fallaway Throwaway - transition from CP to OP, guy releases on second triple 4. Link - transition from OP to CP, j-hook the lead between triples to close 5. Change of Places Right to Left - oddly-named Jive version of the Tucked Turn - marked in routines by either. From Closed Position to Open Position 6. Change of Places Left to Right - aka Loop Turn, standard open position underarm turn for lady, turn occurs between the two chasses 6b. Change of Places Left to Right with Change of Hands - above but switch to right handshake hold after turn 7. Change of Hands Behind Back - aka Waist Slide - may be ended with either L2R or R2R hold 8. Hip Bump - aka Left Shoulder Shove - from OP, chasse towards each other, QaQ, turn R(L) and bump, a, end with curved chasse to facing OP 9. American Spin - with either L2R or R2R hold, spin occurs on second chasse 10. Walks - from Closed Position, take second chasse fwd into Promenade Position, and follow with traveling swivels (QQQQ). This is the best traveling figure for the Bronze syllabus. 11. Stop and Go - aka Peek a Boo, extra Rock Step inserted between the chasses when man loop turns woman and catches her 12. Mooch - Jive's answer to the four kicks, (DO NOT precede with 4 walks back) from closed position, Fallaway Rock to OPP or RSP, then kick-step with outside then inside foot, Rock-Step, curved chasse to end either OCPP or LSP, Rock-Step with off foot, then kick-step with outside then inside foot, Rock Step, and finish with a curved chasse back to PP. One variation is to dance another RSP set of kicks before moving on 13. Whip - the second half of the Lindy Whip (cross-side chasse), preceeded by either 1-5 of Link or 1-5 of Fallaway Rock, keep follower in CP. Sometimes in routines, 'whip' will stand for the precede+whip. A variation is the double whip, with two cross-sides used 14. Whip Throwaway - same as above except follower released back into OP after turn Syllabus Mastery Routine (35m) Fallaway Rock, Fallaway Throwaway, Hip Bump x2, Link, Tuck Turn, Loop Turn, Stop and Go x2, 1-5 Link to Whip Throwaway, 1-5 Link to Whip, Mooch, Walks, 4-8 Tuck Turn, Loop Turn, Change of Hands Behind Back, American Spin x2, Loop Turn with Hand Change, Link Routines 1. Reverse Whip - a jive-y reverse top, do fallaway rock, then fwd-side chasse turning L, then RF side, LF swivel to cross (5-6), then R chasse. Cuban Cross for woman only on the 5-6 steps 2. Windmill - jive version of the left side pass, accentuated by whipping the R2L hold up and then down in a circular fashion across the hold 3. Spanish Arms - a wrap to Tandem Position and unwrap over the course of a normal rhythm, can be ended with additional rotation by the follower with leader releasing R2L hold after strong pull 4. Rolling off Arm - 1-5 link to wrap position, take 2 (or 4) walks fwd (Lady back), release with LH then pull with right arm to roll woman off the arm as she does her chasse to OP 5. Simple Spin - taken after a loop turn finished Open CPP, spin woman to right over QQ. Man turns 1/4L 6. Miami Special - aka Comb, aka Curl - loop turn with R2R hold, guy turns R under arm after lady and let's her right arm slide down his left arm Mastery of Syllabus Routine (18m) Fallaway Rock, Reverse Whip, Fallaway Throwaway, Loop to Open CPP, Simple Spin ended R2R, Miami Special, Loop to double hold, Windmill, Spanish Arms, Rolling off the Arm, Spanish Arms with spin ending, Link Routines 1. (74b) Link Whip, Reverse Whip, Fallaway Whip, Walks, Fallaway Whip Throwaway Loop, Simple Spin, American Spin, Rolling off the Arm, American Spin, Spanish Arms Gold 1. Curly Whip - jive version of Natural Top with UAT. After whip, fwd break (like Open Rumba Basic) then LF Chasse turning 1/2R while turn turning woman 1/2L under arm, follow with Whip or Whip Throwaway 2. Shoulder Spin - like switching from R2R behind back, back don't release hold. Rock again in OCPP, chasse towards one another placing L hand on her R shoulder, then spin her R releasing both holds 3. Toe Heel Swivel - this is the most common gold move done socially by less experienced dancers. using a double hold as brace, bring L toe in, then L heel out, then cross over RF. Repeat on the other foot. A variety of different rhythms can be employed from swing-style QQS, to average jive QQQ, to double time QaQ. Exaggerated hip twists can also be performed on the cross over. It isn't in the book, but an acceptable way to get out of this is with a back kick-weight-step (QaQ). 4. Chugging - this is a jive version of Continuous Hip Twists, with the follower making alternating turns of 1/4R on L chasses, and 1/2L on R chasses (her side). Man makes cuban crosses to initiate two of his LF chasses. 5. Chicken walks - the second most popular gold move for social situations, and often used by bronze swing dancers when the invigilation isn't good. The follower slinkily places fwd her lead foot without weight, flexing back knee and twisting the hips towards the lead foot side. Weight taken only prior to the next foot's step. Timing variations exists for this as well 6. Catapult - with R2R hold, take first six-count to bring woman behind guy (in place) to tandem position, taking double hold. Break step away from one another, then bring lady around man's left side with 1 1/2 turns to the right over the two chasses (1 on the first, 1/2 on second). 7. Stalking Walks, Flicks and Break - this is actually an amalagamation of three distinct elements. The stalking walks are performed in promenade position, first pointing (Q) with body inclination to the side of the pointing foot, then replace weight onto that foot (Q). The basic figure has this done three times, LRL (RLR). Then RF flick across in PP, then close (QQ), LF flick across in CPP, then close (QQ) and repeat both flicks. the Break is different, stepping RF (LF) fwd and across and holding (QQQ), then replace back (a), and replace fwd (Q) Mastery of Syllabus Routine (26m) 1-5 Link to Whip, Curly Whip, Whip Throwaway (overturned), Chicken Walks, 3-8 Fallaway Throwaway, Loop to double hold, Toe Heel Swivels, 3-20 Stalking Walks, Flicks and Break, 3-8 tuck Turn, Loop and hand change, Chugging, Catapult, Shoulder Spin ended L2R 1.
