PATTERNS AND ROUTINES FOR INTERNATIONAL PASO DOBLE -copyright Jonathan Tyrone Rowell, 2003 Notes: 1) Paso Doble is the reenactment of the Spanish Matador facing off with the Bull. The Man is the Matador, and the Woman is his cape. The dance has influences from the Flamenco. The mood is taken seriously among competitors and most dancers today, but originally it was invented by the French as a cultural jest at the expense of the Spanish. 2) Unlike all the other dances, the man takes to the center in Paso Doble. 3) There is a tendancy lately for followers to take on the role of not the cape but the bull, or to interchange between them. Bronze/Student Teacher 1. Sur Place - in place or quarter turn. Step/tap in high or high/mid elevation, all foot action from the ankle, knees straight. RF traditionally starts for man, LF for lady. 4 or 8 beats, or as a filler for another figure. Steps may be done on flat feet or slightly on toes or done with slow rise from flat to toes. 2. Basic Movement - movement of the Sur Place fwd or back. Steps are not large. 3. Chasse to Right - there are two elevations used on chasses, high (on toes) and looking and leaning toward the direction of travel, and low (knees flexed) and looking away lean against travel. Foot work is side-together (toes or IE/F) 3b. Chasse to Left - same elevation situation as above. When on normal footing, must initiate with an Appel of RF (LF lady), and end with LF (RF) in place. 4 or 8 beats, or as necessary (both). 4. Drag - possibly a R Chasse with the together step dragged out over three beats -check 5. Deplacement - also called the Attack, four beat figure. Appel (or Slip Appel), Fwd step with 1/4L, then side together. 6. Promenade Link - aka Promenade Close. Through-together-side - together. 7. Promenade - check 8. Ecart - four beat figure. Appel, Fwd, Side, whisk into PP. 9. Separation - eight beat figure. Appel, one fwd step pushing woman (woman does two back steps) away into L2R hold and close(-close). Man does a 4 beat Sur Place. Lady walks fwd, swiveling, knees coming up high on each step, like a prancing stallion. End in closed position. 10. Separation with Lady's Caping Walks - 16 beat figure. Perform separation above, but lead woman to R side. Next 8 steps, man does a Sur Place ( possibly some turn L), leading woman to walk around like in Rope Spinning, taking closed position at the end. 11. Fallaway Ending to Separation - facing, do a walk around, leading her to turn underarm (or walkaround), to end in Fallaway position (1-4), then two Chasses to R. 12. Huit - Eight beat figure ("huit" is French for 8). Open into promenade position. Now step through on first beat. 2nd step is either side or close for the man - he need not move any further in the figure. The woman steps past him towards his left side and turns, a replaces her LF (2&3). She now takes two steps to his right side, turns, and replaces her RF (45&6). She ends stepping in front, turning to face, and closing (7&8). This is called the caping action. 13. Sixteen - Similar to Huit, but as part of a 16 beat/step figure. Appel as you open to PP and step fwd with outside leg (12). Lady continues fwd, as man cuts across her line and side steps in front (34). Guy now does three back steps curving right to back wall while she continues down the LOD (567). Turn the lady (&) and both replace (8). Now in place, lead woman through caping action, with her turning after counts 10 and 13 and squaring up on count 16. 14. Promenade and Counter Promenade - I learned this a while ago, but I've forgotten it. might be a bota fogo-esque pattern - check. 15. Grand Circle - did this one but forgotten. "8 or 12 steps (Man SSS-;--S-; change weight gradually during unwind from 4 to 7, Touch on 8)" Possibly the untwist from Promenade Position we did after between the Ecart and Shadow Attack. ended with a through-together step on 7-8. - check. 16. Open Telemark - four step figure: (slip) appel, then the waltz open telemark to PP. 17. Appel - no longer listed as a separate figure. There are at least four varieties of appel. Stomp: raising the heel/foot before lowering hard. Drop: flex the knee(s) then lower heel - may also be done as a double. Slip: man's R toe next to instep, lady's L heel next to instep. Double: both heels/feet are brought up before lowering (jackhammer). The latter is sometimes used quite dramatically in advanced Paso routines [are there any other kinds?] Silver/Licentiate 17. La Passe - only description I have is 16 beats, man walking fwd as woman turns. Possibly a Maypole without volta action? - check 18. Banderillas - check 19. Twist Turn - possibly similar to either Tango's Natural Twist Turn or the Foxtrot Natural Twist Turn. - check 20. Fallaway Reverse Turn - (slip) appel followed by the Fallaway Reverse of Waltz?. (Crowder routine says 8 beats) 21. Coup de Pique - one rhythm description is 1234 56&78, with lowering to promenade on 1 3 and 5. -check 22. Left Foot Variation - check 23. Spanish Lines - probably the best pose image you take away from Paso Doble. The couple is turned out from one another (or RSP/LSP), weight on back foot, fwd foot (usually at right angles and down either LOD or aLOD) knee flexed and heel raised. You can switch between Spanish Lines of either feet by doing a three step spin (fwd-side-back) and posting without weight on 4th beat. 24. Flamenco Taps - several ways (and rhythms) to do Taps. Basic is in a Spanish Line, take weight fwd (1), then tap behind twice and step back (2&3), and post the line again (4). Arm styling on both the Taps and Lines are all about projecting power. With Taps you typically get a raising of the fwd arm. Gold/Fellow 25. Syncopated Separation - check 26. Traveling Spins from Promenade Position - two interpretations - Appel and three walks in PP. Then spin down LOD, man R woman L on the next four beats stepping through on 5. Alternatively, after the appel and walks, the man continues to walk as woman spin turns under arm down LOD. 27. Traveling Spins from Counter Promenade Position - see comments above. The first four steps are Appel, fwd, across and side for man to get in her way (like Sixteen). Now either both spin (opposite from above), or man curves his walk as woman turns R under arm. In the routine I showed this spring, we used this latter interpretation as a lead into the lady's kneel down. 28. Fregolina (Farol) - 20? beat figure. one source says "1-8 similar to Sixteen. Lady around on 9 to 16 with Spiral on 12. Step in front of man, turn, side close." - particular example I have (variations) is an 8 beat figure (9steps). Possibly including some or all of the following: from Fallaway position (couple backing LOD), replace, fwd (part weight) and hold for two beats (promenade Press Line); guy holds for four beats leading spirals to R on 6 and 8 (W take weight RF, LF fwd spiral 3/4R to W, RF fwd, LF fwd spiral 3/4R to LOD); guy closes LF, turns R, holding for three beats switching to R2L (W four steps behind man curving L to end RSP), guy holds another two beats turning her R (W RF fwd aLOD in front of M then 3/4R (&6) LR, end with side-together Chasse to R. 29. the Twists - check 30. Chasse Cape, all endings - the only information that I have is a timing listing covering 32 beats of music. - check General Routines Spring routine: (76b) Ecart, Promenade Close, Sur Place (4), Ecart, 6 step unwind ended with free spiral for lady (RShP - her in front), two steps fwd DW, Shadow Attack, LF fwd curving L to TP on LOD, RF hook, guy LF close and lady untwist, double appel and hold (81), 2-8 Chasse to L, Huit, Travelling Spins in CPP with Lady kneel down, recovery into Spanish Line RSP, Spanish Line LSP, Flamenco Taps, Spanish Line RSP, quasi-Promenade Close 1.
