PATTERNS AND ROUTINES FOR INTERNATIONAL QUICKSTEP -copyright Jonathan Tyrone Rowell, 2003 48-52 mpm Notes: Despite the speed of the music, Quickstep is not as lightning fast as it first appears. Most newcomers (myself included) tend to try and hurry it more than they should. It should have a happy relaxed feel about the dance, even as you gasp for air after the round is over. Bronze 1. Quarter Turn to R - together with Progressive Chasse, makes the "basic" of Quickstep. Try to keep steps on the same line parallel to the wall, even though you are turning. 2. Natural Turn - first of several corner navigation figures, almost all turning to the right. the first three steps are SQQ and feel like an American Foxtrot Natural Turn. the last three steps, all slows, are a heel pull and LF fwd. When first learning, there is a tendancy to fudge the heel pull with a side step. 3. Natural Turn with Hesitation - like the Natural turn, except gather the LF without weight ("hesitation"). While the Hesitation can be used at corners (add a fourth slow for LF fwd for prep), it is best for turning back to wall and going into reverse figures. For competitions, this is the move you need to flash judges your number as you pass by. Otherwise, you have to hope they see you on the opposite side of the floor. 4. Natural Pivot Turn - really just the first four steps of the Natural Spin Turn, with the LF back down LOD pivoting up to 1/2R. Corner figure to be followed by a natural figure. I can't recall ever having seen the Natural Pivot done outside of the Spin Turn. 5. Natural Spin Turn - as the waltz figure. Can be used underturned at the corner (most bronze dancers), but with development you can get the spin to end backing DC along the side. Timing is SQQ SSS 6. Progressive Chasse - the other half of the "basic". Like the Quarter Turn to R, try and keep steps on a single line parallel to wall. 7. Chasse Reverse Turn - should be introduced at the same time as Hesitation. Works like a normal waltz reverse turn to end backing LOD (SQQ). The basic follow is the Progressive Chasse curved to end facing DW. 8. Forward Lock - Instead of a natural figure, RF fwd DW and then lock step RF behind LF. End LF fwd. Movement is more LOD than DW. Continue with a natural figure. 9. Closed Impetus - Another corner figure, the closed impetus is no easier in quickstep than it was in waltz or foxtrot. SQQ SSS is the rhythm. 10. Back Lock - The locking action is LF in front of RF on the QQ. When man does Fwd Lock, lady does Back Lock. When man does Back Lock, lady does fwd lock. Typically used after a Progressive Chasse to R, but can also be a follow to a full-turn Spin Turn (last slow (LF) becomes 1st slow of Lock). 11. Reverse Pivot - quickstep has an advantage over waltz concerning the Reverse Pivot, because here the timing may be either & or S. (RF back then pivot). Can follow a host of figures, and isn't tied to a specific alignment. A sequence that I've begun to work on is the Chasse Reverse Turn, slow Reverse Pivot to Progressive Chasse to R. 12. Progressive Chasse to Right - The foot order is LRLR and moves to the right (usually backing W to some extent). This is the second figure you pick up as a follow to the Hesitation. 13. Tipple Chasse to Right - can be used along side of room or, more common, at the corner. You get this side-to-side feeling, particularly on corners. Except for the first step, everything is on toes, even the RF slow (SQQSQQ). The slow is used as a post to redirect movement, and the last bit is really just a fwd lock. 14. Running Finish - two rhythms, SQQS and QQSS. The last slow is glued into the first RF slow of the following natural figure. Feet are passing (as opposed to a chasse) on each step, turning right. Usually used at corner, after having turned to back old DW or LOD. 15. Natural Turn & Back Lock - Amalgamation of 1-3 Natural Turn and Back Lock, typically taken down LOD. Tipple Chasse or Running Finish as ending. 16. Double Reverse Spin - two half spins with a weightless heel pull (SSS). Woman pivots on RF back, then around the guy to end locking LF in front of RF (SSQQ). - like the waltz figure with the timing difference indicated. 17. Heel Pivot - has been relegated to acceptable variation. Substitute for the Progressive Chasse, by replacing the chasse with the heel pivot. end LF a little more fwd than with the Progressive Chasse. 18. Zig-Zag Back Lock, Running Finish* - acceptable variation. The Zig Zag is a 3/8L turn, LF first facing LOD on two steps (SS). Woman completes her turn on first back step, heel turning to DW. The Back Lock and Running Finish are as above. 19. Cross Chasse - acceptable variation. This one is weird. with LF free facing DW, LF fwd (S), QQ side-together chasse, RF fwd (S). You have to really plan on it to get to this figure, like adding a reverse pivot action to the last step of a back lock. 20. Change of Direction - acceptable variation, as the Foxtrot figure. Extra hesitation acceptable. (9m) Natural Spin Turn, Reverse Pivot, Chasse Reverse Turn, Prog Chasse, Natural turn to Back Lock and Running Finish Silver/Licentiate 1. Quick Open Reverse - the first step (LF fwd LOD) is typically the last step of the preceding figure. SQQS is the rhythm, half a turn L is accomplished (3/8, 1/8 for man, 1/2, bct for woman) on first two steps. Now the book argues that the last step (RF back, Slow) should be the first step of the next figure, but I don't see any reason why Back Lock, Running Finish or Tipple Chasse couldn't be used as well. 2. Fishtail - RF fwd (S), then LF cross behind, RF small side, then normal Fwd Lock. The name comes the fact that you have this pendulum flap as you do the four quicks like the tail of a fish. Some of you have been taught RF fwd, LF replace, RF close as the first three steps - I personally don't like the look of it, because you loose the "fishtail" appearance. 3. Running Right Turn - basically, do an overturned (extra 1/8R at end) Natural Spin Turn to back LOD, take a RF back (LF fwd for lady) then do a Running Finish using the rhythm QQSS. 4. Four Quick Run - This is a reverse figure initiated with the RF going back against LOD. Chasse Reverse Turn is common entry, but also Spin Turns and turned Quarter Turns to Right can be used among others. 3/8L is achieved on first step (1/4, 1/8 for lady), then you run THREE steps, all Q. Lock on the next quick, and then a normal slow as with fwd locks. 5. V6 - the path swept out by the couple is in a v-shape, and the back and fwd lock action is reminescent of the piston action of a V-6 engine. start backing DC, perform a Back Lock. Then (SQQ) take LF back, RF back and 1/4L, and LF fwd to face DW. Now just do a Fwd Lock. 6. Closed Telemark - identical to the Waltz figure. Three timings are acceptable: SSSS, SQQS and QQSS Routines Mastery of Silver Syllabus Routine (24.5m) Natural Turn with Hesitation, Closed Telemark (SQQ), Nat Spin Turn, 2-12 V-6, Running Right Turn, Fishtail, Nat Turn (at Corner), Nat Turn with Hesitation, Chasse Rev Turn, Rev Pivot, Quick Open Reverse, Four Quick Run 1. (5m) Nat Hesitation, Chasse Rev Turn, Rev Pivot, Closed Telemark Gold/Fellow 1. Cross Swivel - LF fwd, 1/4L, RF close w/out weight, then RF fwd OP (SSS). The book says to go from DW to DC, but the listed follows only work if at a corner (so new DW) or if instead you started DC and turned to back DW (like Running Finish). Using the alignment given, I think it would perfectly acceptable to go into a Chasse Reverse Turn or Progressive Chasse to R. 2. Six Quick Run - six steps, all Q (next figure start OP). RF back to DC, 1/4L, three runs, lock RF behind LF (LF in front of RF), and LF diag fwd (RF diag back). Note that the last three steps are the Fwd Lock, but with the timing difference on the last step (Q not S). The book's choice of precedes and follows become increasingly baffling. Nat Spin Turn isn't mentioned as a precede, but a 1/2 turned Progressive Chasse to R (normally ended RF back slow) is. 3. Rumba Cross - a very sharp Natural Top. Facing LOD, step LF into partner, 1/4R, then hook, another 1/4R, then LF side and back to pivot 1/2R to again face LOD. Rhythm is QQS. May be repeated by taking a RF fwd step (S) in between. 4. Tipsy to Right - not tied down to alignment, and one of the few syllabus figures to make use of half beats. Further complicating things is that you may turn either L or R up to 3/8 of a turn. with RF, small side step and turn (Q). Then move LF halfway to RF, lower (&). Finally RF small side, down with sharp bend of knees (Q). Continue with either the Tipsy to Left or Fwd Lock. 4b. Tipsy to Left - mirror pattern of Tipsy to Right. Finish with either Tipsy to Right, or start with the second step of Back Lock, Tipple Chasse or V-6. 5. Hover Corte - identical to the waltz figure with the timing SSSS.
