FIGURES AND ROUTINES FOR INTERNATIONAL SAMBA -copyright Jonathan Tyrone Rowell, 2003 50 mpm (25 mpm) Notes: 1. Traditionally, Samba is listed as 2/4 timing with 50 measures a minute. The routines below consider samba being danced to 4/4 music (at 25 measures per minute). 2. There are several rhythms used in Samba. "Slow" is one beat of music (half a traditional measure) and "Quick is a half beat (a quarter of a traditional measure). The different rhythms are (visually) beat 1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . . 4 . . . 5 . . . 6 . . . 7 . . . 8 . . . 1a2 * . . * * . . . * . . * * . . . * . . * * . . . * . . * * . . . 1a2a3a4 * . . * * . . * * . . * * . . . * . . * * . . * * . . * * . . . Basic Movement - There are four different versions of the Basic Movement, all using the 1a2 3a4 timing. The most familiar to Americans is the Reverse Basic - LF fwd on the first (half) measure, RF back on the second. The Natural Basic is the opposite: RF fwd on the first, LF back on the second. There is a Side Basic with the first step taken to the side. Finally, the Progressive Basic, is 1-3 Natural Basic facing DW followed by Left Side Basic. 2. Whisks - functionally replaces the Side Basic. First step is to the side, and on the a2, whisk behind in a Cuban Cross and replace. LF and RF whisks can be done independent of the other if needed for choreography. 3. Samba Walks - Three versions all using the 1a2 timing. The a2 is used for a quick back step and drag of the lead foot. 3a. Travelling (Promenade) Samba Walks - In PP or RSP, the first step is Fwd 3b. Side Samba Walk - slight modification. Lead foot closes, then side step and drag. Always RF for man and LF for woman. 3c. Stationary Samba Walks - facing one another, the lead foot is slightly fwd or close. 4. Rhythm Bounce - this is useful only for rhythm training or as need for good phrasing of the choreography. A Side Basic done to the rhythm 1a2a3a4 5. Volta Movements - The volta itself is a side step and drag in front for a Cuban Cross on the "a*" beats. Normally used with the timing 1a2a3a4, with the first step either fwd or across in a Cuban Cross. 5a. Traveling Voltas - facing one another (OP or CP), do a RF/LF (LF/RF) series of Voltas. May be curved up to 3/8 in either direction. 5b. Pushing Voltas - dance Voltas as 1a2 3a4, switching feet each half-measure. Man goes fwd diag on first step, while follower goes back and diag. - this one is not explicit in the book, but has been seen on the competitive floor. There might be a syllabus restriction on some of the styling, but the basic footwork is simple and should still pass invigilation. 6. Traveling Bota Fogos Forward - In Closed Position, guy will step fwd (diag) OP turn and point the other leg, then replace (1a2). The problem most people make when first doing Bota Fogos is that the "point" actually is a quick, minimal weight shift rather than a true point. a 1/4R is made when led with RF and a 1/4L is made when led with LF. The "little red book" starts the figure with the RF, but since most American dancers initiate with the LF, just shift things a bit. 7. Criss Cross Bota Fogos (Shadow Bota Fogos) - a pattern useable once the couple is in Open PP with only L2R hold. Both will do Fwd Bota Fogos, with woman passing under the joined arms for each Bota Fogo. Lady slightly advanced on each Bota Fogo. 8. Traveling Bota Fogos Backward - back steps for guy. Lady does fwd Bota Fogos. The turn is more delayed for whichever person is going backwards. 9. Bota Fogos to Promenade Position and Counter Promenade Position - Use first (LF) Fwd Bota Fogo to open into PP rather than stepping OP. Now for each Bota Fogo, step through the partnership switching between PP and CPP. 10. Criss Cross Voltas - like the Criss Cross Bota Fogos, but with Voltas. An important style point is that the path of the voltas should resemble a double helix rather than two parallel lines. 11. Solo Spot Volta - Stepping fwd/side (either foot), your body twists somewhat to make a Cuban Cross (1/2 turn). On the a2, do a volta action turning another 1/2 turn. Equivalent to Spot Turns in other Latin dances. Can also be danced over a full measure, 1a2a3a4, making two full turns over the four beats. 11b. Lady's Spot Volta Turn - Samba's underarm turns. Man dances a whisk while lady performs a Solo Spot Volta under the joined arms. Either side. 12. Foot Changes - this is a big point of contention. Recently, the ISTD Samba Syllabus was revised, and many moves, including Foot Changes which were gold, have been pushed down into Bronze and Silver. Not all head judges and invigilators have bought into this. [The Shadow sequence that I developed for Leonard and Marissa got them through several rounds at Ohio, but were busted at RPI because of this] My recommendation is use it unless explicitly told not to by the competition officials. 12a. Foot Change 1 is a switch from CP to Right Shadow Position (RShP). Dance 1-3 Reverse Basic, then step-step while leading W to do a Solo Spot Turn (1/2 to 5/8L). Foot Change 2 is the switch back to CP. Step-Step while leading a spot turn, then do the Through-Side-close or R Whisk, depending on position. 12c. Shadow Figures: The following Bronze figures are permitted in Shadow Position - Samba Walks, Bota Fogos Fwd, and Travelling Voltas (be sure not to turn too tightly - that's Silver). 13. Shadow Travelling Volta - Shadow figure that is explicitly mentioned in the ISTD Bronze Syllabus 14. Reverse Turn - Like Viennese Waltz Reverse Turn. LF fwd, RF side, LF cross to back LOD, then RF back, LF side, RF together. Woman has same footwork, starting RF back. Timing is 1a2 3a4 15. Corta Jaca - means "cut the jack" or fruit of the maxixe tree, which is another name for this move (American Style) but not to be confused with the Int Samba open move called Maxixe - got that straight? In joking, I could actually see some guy below a tree trying to catch fruit thrown down by his partner. The Corta Jaca can be done from either foot (book is again RF oriented). Take a fwd (back) step in CP then: fwd/side, drag, back/side, drag, fwd/side, drag. Count is SQQ QQQQ (1 2&3&4&). steps 4-7 can be repeated. 16. Closed Rocks - baby brother to Open Rocks (silver move). No bounce is used. Guy's steps are fwd-fwd (small)-replace. Woman goes back (LOD), back (DW/DC), replace (aLOD). The small little 1/8 turns are the noticeable feature. Rhythm is SQQ per rock. Woman's upper body should remain square to man. 17. Through Side Together - not really a move on the syllabus, but this is a common ending used for Bota Fogo actions and other figures that are in PP or CPP position. (4m) Fwd Bota Fogos LR, Foot Change (spinning follower L), Shadow Bota Fogos LRL, Foot Change (spinning follower R), RF Samba Walk Silver/Licentiate 1. Open Rocks - as Closed Rocks, except follower is now turning 1/4 in her rocks. There are some advanced stylings that can be done with the Open Rocks that look like Argentine Tango flicks. 2. Back Rocks - Man doing rocks backing LOD. Couple makes gradual 1/4 turns (direction same as fwd foot, opposite to back foot). A styling called Polka bounce is used 3. Plait - Samba's Chicken Walks. Man backing LOD, to the rhythm of SS QQS. May be done with either foot. Woman 1/4 turns from hip, but feet remain parallel, and shoulders square to man. 4. Rolling off the Arm - Somewhat similar to the Jive move. Use a LF stationary Samba Walk while leading woman into wrapped position. Take a RF Samba Walk. Now whisk to L while leading her to roll off (spin). Whisk back to R, j-hooking the lead to rewrap her (spin). Do another two Samba Walks, and repeat, but pull her across and release, picking up closed position and going into a reverse turn (other exits possible). If you look at the book, the rhythm count is listed as "123 123" - this is not beats 1, 2 and 3. Rather it is a code (see front of book) for "3/4 beat, 1/2 beat, 3/4 beat". Many people will also teach it as 1a2 or 1&2. 5. Argentine Crosses - no bounce. Couple ends up circling 1 1/2R. When RF leads, RF fwd in line, LF side and back, RF fwd in line. When LF leads, LF fwd, RF hooks (Cuban Cross), LF side and fwd. Footwork same for both. [For fun, this pattern is easily adapted to Waltz - JTR] 6. Maypole - Lady does a four-count solo spot volta (R or L), while man dances a travelling Volta (L/CCW or R/CW) around her. 7. Shadow Circular Volta - danced in Right Shadow Position, same foot. 1a2a3a4. Up to a complete turn made. Innermost person should stay in place, otherwise the outside dancer will have difficulty travelling around. 8. Foot Changes 3 and 4 - switches between PP or Open PP and RShP. Lady still spot voltas. Contra Bota Fogos - on same foot, dance fwd Bota Fogos OP/towards R or L side (both). this is called Contra Position (RCP or LCP) 2. Roundabout - Same as Contra Bota Fogos, but with Circular Voltas. Do 5 steps of voltas (1a2a3) then a Bota Fogo-esque side replace. Either side. 3. Natural Roll - no bounce. Engaging in a counterclockwise body roll while dancing a "natural" turn. [this seems odd, in that it is a right turning figure. This may be one of the mistakes that is floating in book, body roll might go clockwise - JTR] - See a professional for more info. 4. Reverse Roll - opposite of above, yet also listed with a counterclockwise roll. See a professional for more info. 5. Promenade and Counter Promenade Runs - Smooth dancers will be familar with the pattern, if not the rhythm. In smooth, say waltz, the measure of the turning partner would be RF fwd and across, LF side, RF brush and fwd. Samba rhythm marks the start of the measure on the second step (LF side). Remainder of steps are fwd runs. A very dynamic variation of this uses a R2R handshake hold, so the partners look like they are slinging and leapfrogging past one another. 6. Three Step Turn - guy does a simple LF stationary walk (1a2). Woman turns to man and takes RF side to back LOD, and spirals L to DC. LF fwd, then RF side to face aLOD and spiral L again to face DW. All this is done to that "123" rhythm that actually takes place over two beats of music. Woman winds up on man's left side in OCPP. 7. Samba Locks - Like Cha Cha locks with some minor twisting. 8. Cruzados Walks and Locks - Cruzados Locks are Samba Locks done on the same foot in RShP. The twisting is more pronounced. The Cruzados Walks are fwd steps with the Cruzados hip action used. 9. Foot Changes 5,6,7 and 8 - Foot Changes 5 and 6 are between PP and RCP (use a foot flick for guy for instance, while she dance a Bota Fogo). Foot Change 7 is RCP to OCPP with man taking twok stationary samba walks (RL) leading W to dance 1-7 Criss Cross Voltas behind his back. Foot Change 8 is from RSP to RShP. Start out with 1-3 Rolling off Arm, guy step-steps and lady does a full turn L on three steps.
